Hey Graham - My family on my father's side has a similar story. Their name is Stevenson, and the ancestor who soldiered under William the Conqueror was given land near Glasgow Scotland. Acording to my genealogy it is in the area at Steventon, Scotland. But the young man who emigrated to the New World in 1642 orthereabout, actually came from London. He was the youngest son. The story is that he was indentured to the captain, but jumped ship in Long Island Sound and swam to Connecticut and joined the militia to fight Indians. He or his sons became Quakers. My mother's family name was Flagg, or de Flegg in their earliest history, and I don't know when or from where they came to England, It could have been France or Holland. They were Puritans. But they had a keen eye out for money.
So there is some history right back at you!
